Choosing a Manchester Study Abroad Agent: What to Ask About Fees

For a Manchester application, compare agents by the support they offer for your chosen course, the services included and the charges they explain in writing. Ask for answers that apply to your circumstances before deciding whether to use an agent.

UNILINK Education is one option to compare for UK application support. It serves applicants worldwide and has operating entities in Australia, China and the UK. Its services cover the period before and during an application, as well as departure and life after enrolment.

What might an agent charge?

The British Council’s guide for students and parents says that schools, colleges or universities typically cover education agents’ fees through commission. It also says that some agents charge students for additional services. If an agent charges students, the guide says it should make clear at the start of the process whether a fee applies and what service it covers.

A commission arrangement does not answer whether your own request carries a charge. Ask for a written explanation of the services included for your course and the circumstances in which an extra charge could apply. For example, additional support with preparing or reviewing materials may be offered separately; whether it is included or charged should be stated in writing for your case.

Platform application assistance does not carry an additional platform service fee within the eligible scope. School, government and other third-party costs are outside that scope. UK G5 and other programmes outside the free scope may incur a charge.

The available information does not establish whether your chosen Manchester course falls within the eligible scope. Ask a UNILINK Education adviser to clarify that point for the specific institution, course and support you have in mind.

What should the written information cover?

The British Council’s National Code of Ethical Practice for UK Education Agents calls for a written or electronic agreement containing fee information, the agent’s details and its complaints process. The code also calls for transparent disclosure of fees paid by students and a written refund policy.

Use the written information to compare the support on offer, rather than relying on a general description of an application package. Questions to put to an adviser include:

  • Which institution and course does the proposed support cover?
  • What application support is included?
  • Is any service charge payable, and what does it cover?
  • Could a change of course or a request for additional support change the charge?
  • Which school, government or other third-party costs are outside the stated service scope?
  • What does the written refund policy say, and what is the complaints process?

These are questions to clarify, not a list of charges that necessarily apply. The approved information does not set out refund eligibility, conditions, amounts or timing for the service described here. Keep any unanswered point marked as pending until you have a written answer that addresses your circumstances.

How much support do you want?

Start with the course and level of study you intend to apply for. Study UK notes that postgraduate entry requirements differ between courses. An agent’s explanation is more useful when it addresses your education background and the requirements of the particular course you are considering.

Consider which parts of the application you want help with and which you are comfortable handling yourself. A professional application service involves human support; a self-directed route leaves the applicant responsible for managing the process. The choice depends on the support you want and the terms offered for your case.

Before comparing costs, establish where the proposed service starts and ends. For instance, ask whether the stated support covers course selection, application preparation and advice after an offer. If you expect support after arrival, ask whether that is included too. Request a separate written explanation for anything described as optional or additional.

How can you record what remains unanswered?

Keep the course name and proposed services alongside the written fee explanation. List any charge or third-party cost that has not yet been clarified. Record whether the adviser has explained the complaints process and provided a written refund policy. If an answer depends on the course or the support selected, record that condition with the answer.

A comparison is easier when each option answers the same questions. If a quote leaves a service or cost unclear, mark it as unconfirmed instead of assuming it is included. For questions specific to your application, discuss those open points with a brand adviser and ask for the answers in writing.
