Where the 850 ranked institutions are concentrated

Ten countries and territories account for the largest shares of the listing. The United States leads with 106 ranked institutions, followed by the United Kingdom with 59 and China (Mainland) with 57. India places 44, Germany 33 and France 31. Italy has 26, while Canada has 25 and Australia and Spain each have 24.

The gap between the first and second entries is wider than the gaps among the rest of the top group. The United States alone accounts for a substantial portion of the global listing, and the next three systems — the United Kingdom, China (Mainland) and India — sit within a relatively narrow range of one another. Below that, the counts decline more gradually, with Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Australia and Spain forming a broad middle tier.

This distribution matters for applicants who are weighing a country as much as an institution. A system with more ranked entries offers more programmes to compare, but it also means the national total is spread across a larger number of institutions rather than concentrated in a few.

How deep the top tier runs

The ranking's upper reaches are thin. Ten institutions occupy the top 10, and the top 20 and top 30 each contain exactly 20 and 30 institutions respectively. The top 50 contains 50, and the top 100 contains 100. Beyond that point, the field widens sharply: 151 institutions fall within the top 150, 200 within the top 200, and 306 within the top 300.

The distribution across rank bands shows the same pattern from the other direction. Ranks 1 to 10, 11 to 20 and 21 to 30 each hold 10 institutions. Ranks 31 to 50 hold 20, and ranks 51 to 100 hold 50. The band from 101 to 150 contains 51 institutions, and 151 to 200 contains 49.

Below the top 200, QS publishes rank ranges rather than exact positions for many institutions. The 201–250 and 251–300 ranges each contain 52 and 54 institutions. Further down, the 301–350 and 351–400 ranges hold 48 each, the 401–450 range holds 47, and the 451–500 range holds 51. The pattern continues through successive bands — 501–550 with 50, 551–600 with 51, 601–650 with 49, 651–700 with 48 and 701–750 with 51. The final published range, 751–850, contains 101 institutions.

That final band is notably larger than the others. It reflects the fact that QS groups a wider span of positions into a single range at the tail of the listing, rather than publishing narrower bands.

What the published scores show about the leading group

QS publishes an overall score for only part of the ranked field. Of the 850 listed institutions, 200 have a published overall score and 650 do not. The lowest rank at which a published overall score appears is 200. A missing score does not mean an institution performed poorly or was removed from the ranking — it remains listed, but without a score that can be compared on the same scale.

Among the 200 institutions with a published score, the distribution is steep. Three institutions score 90 or above. Sixteen score 80 or above, 70 score 70 or above, and all 200 score 60 or above. Broken into bands, three institutions fall in the 90–100 band, 13 in the 80–89 band, 54 in the 70–79 band and 130 in the 60–69 band.

The concentration at the top is clearest when looking at the score range within successive cut-offs. Among the top 10 institutions with published scores, the range runs from 85.9 to 94.9. Across the top 20, the lowest published score drops to 78.9. For the top 30 it reaches 76.7, for the top 50 it reaches 72.7, and for the top 100 it reaches 67.6. The highest score in each of these groups remains 94.9.

What this shows is that the distance between the very top and the rest of the leading group is substantial, but it narrows as the cut-off widens. The top 10 are separated from the top 20 by a meaningful margin at the lower end of the range; by the time the comparison extends to the top 100, the floor has fallen considerably. Applicants using scores to shortlist programmes should note that these ranges cover only the institutions whose scores were published, and that the 650 institutions without a published score cannot be placed on this scale at all.

What the ranking does not tell you

Several features of the data limit what can be concluded. QS publishes exact ranks for the leading institutions but only rank ranges for many others, particularly below the top 200. An institution listed in the 101–200 range cannot be assigned a precise position, and its placement relative to a specific cut-off such as the top 150 cannot be determined from the published range alone. For this reason, comparisons that depend on exact ordering should be confined to institutions with published exact ranks.

A median rank for the full listing cannot be computed. The institution at the median position has only a published rank range, so no single median figure can be derived for the 850-institution field.

The overall score is likewise partial. Because it is published for only 200 of the 850 institutions, any statement about score distribution describes that subset alone. It says nothing about the 650 institutions listed without a score, and it should not be read as evidence that those institutions fall below any particular threshold.
